About
Why I'm making this
I'm Michael Matzko, a photographer and composer in Cincinnati. Five years ago I started sitting down with people and asking them to tell me their story, in their own words and at their own pace.
What we truly have in common is that each of us experiences our story in a way no one else can.
Our story is who we perceive we are, and how we live the journey. I believe everyone's story is special and deeply interesting.
Each session is a meeting of three people: the person telling their story, the artist answering it, and you. Watch enough of them, over time, and you start to sense what truly connects us.
On Being Human is free, always. I make it at night and on weekends, so new sessions take time. Nine people to start. A hundred, I hope, over the years, with more artists bringing their own point of view.
What you'll always find here
- The whole conversationEvery session comes with the full interview, unedited. Nothing is cut to make a point.
- Real people, real namesThe person telling the story is named and seen, never a type or a topic.
- Artists credited as authorsThe portraits and music are the artists’ own response, and they carry their names.
- Made to be watched all the way throughNo clips or teasers. Each film is meant for one sitting, with good sound.
How a session is made
- 1The conversationUnhurried, unscripted, recorded in full.
- 2The portraitsArt photographs that interpret what was shared.
- 3The filmWords, images and music cut into one piece.
